Overall, this is absolutely the best starting point for the beginner JavaScript student, and I would recommend it to any web professional who works with code on a daily basis. It will teach you to apply the same unobtrusive principles that you hopefully already apply of CSS to XHTML documents, instructing you how to do the same with JavaScript.

If you want to learn any detail about JavaScript, your first stop is probably Google. With this in mind, the significance of books about JavaScript has fallen, as free Web-based content has grown. However, I’m still of the mindset that there is no better vehicle for learning than a good book that lays out a technology in an easy-to-understand format. The authors do a very good job of laying out their topics, and I enjoyed their clear, enjoyable writing style. I think they do a pretty good job of discussing good development, and they're all over things like browser compatibility issues and other "Gotcha!" type issues.

e clearly knows his stuff and despite the attempt at creating a beginner’s book there are lots of things that will interest the intermediate to expert reader. It emphasises the complexities of having to deal with the reality of browser incompatibilities and I certainly learned something from this aspect of the book.
