A thoughtful, well written book. I've been using PHP since 2002 and this is truly one of the better books I've come across. The projects are diverse and interesting enough to keep interest at a high level. It's given me new takes on old problems as well. If you're new to PHP I wouldn't start out with this book. Get the basics from a Sam's intro and then immediately dive into this book. I wouldn't say the projects are commercial grade but they give you the basic structure to actually author code companies will pay good $$$ for. This book is well worth the price and time spent.
If I had to reduce my library to just three books, this would be one of them. If you add a good intro book and a complete up-to-date reference, you are equipped to earn a living.

Love this book! It's not a "learn how to do it" type of book, but more of a "here's the code, adapt it to your needs" type. There are some great projects included. I still haven't gotten to all of them yet, and there are some that I will probably never use, but just the few that I already have are well worth the purchase price.

The first edition of this book was one of the best books on PHP programming I ever came across. In clear problem-solution structure the book is guiding through the main areas of web programming in PHP, and it helped me immensely in raising my programming standards. The second edition was re-written to accommodate the introduction of PHP5 keeping the same problem-solution approach which worked so well in the first edition, and the authors did very good job indeed. The only downside to this otherwise excellent position is in my opinion; lack of more detailed explanations of certain subjects, and restricted number of topics mentioned in the book. Never the less I recommend this book to any PHP programmer as a good source of reference, the only exception is if you are new to programming this book might be difficult to digest at first so I recommend to get one of the introductory books to PHP and then definitely this one.

I haven't really read much of it due to lack of time, but i've seen that the subjects i was looking for are in some way availble. Structure of the books, as always good and pleasant to read.

These two books are the first PHP books that really helped me understand some basic PHP and on the other hand how to write OOP for PHP.
Keep up the good work!

I have not read them yet. They came much to late for the project on which I was working, so I did the project in ColdFusion. I'll get to them after the first of the year, I imagine.

Book is more advance than I thought, based on the description.
