I haven’t done any research on the matter, but I’m betting that one of the most common phrases used when advertising for a job is “once in a lifetime position”.
Describing the role currently available at SitePoint without using those exact words is going to be difficult, but I’ll give it my best shot.
When Simon Mackie chose to move from England to take up the role of Managing Editor of our print publishing team here at SitePoint, he committed to staying for 18 months. Five years later, he’s decided to finally move back home to be closer to his family, which means that we have a key role to fill.
Simon’s departure is somebody else’s gain.
If you (or someone you know) have strong project management skills, experience in leading a team, and a passion for the Web, then we’d love you to get in touch.
This really is a unique role. It’s exciting, varied and challenging. Coming up with ideas for new titles; commissioning authors; managing the publishing process (and the awesome team involved in producing our products) — these are all part of this position. The right person will probably have some technical knowledge (you might even own one or two of our books) but doesn’t need to be a hardcore code monkey by any means — just a good communicator who is passionate about the Web and can manage a project to a deadline.
The position is not one that can be performed remotely, so you’d need to either be living in Melbourne, Australia, or be prepared to move here. The fact that Simon stuck around for much longer than he intended is a tribute both to the role and to what it’s like to work at SitePoint. It’s certainly an exciting time to come on board.

As Matty pointed out, I was originally supposed to be in the role for 18 months before heading back to England. The main reason behind me sticking around for so much longer is that I’ve really enjoyed my time at SitePoint – it’s a fantastic company to work for and a very rewarding role.

As a side note, I can’t be the only one who noticed this, but if you read the full description for Managing Editor (http://www.sitepoint.com/about/jobs/job9-managing_editor.php), the title element for the page, the legend in the fieldset that holds the position description, and breadcrumb links say Web Developer / Database Guru. Um, shouldn’t those all say Managing Editor?
