I’m not sure if this is the best book we’ve ever done, but it’s undoubtedly my favorite to date. We’ve been kicking around the idea of a ‘Design Rules for Geeks’ book for five years now, but it all seemed too hard for a long time. It’s much easier to visualize a coder’s book from the start and finding someone able to ‘think art’ but ’speak geek’ was a tough ask. Jason not only fits the bill perfectly, but injects his strange but very enjoyable humor too.

Ordering from Sitepoint looks like better value too. It’s listed as a 180 page book here, while Amazon’s description claims 168.

It’s a good book for people like me (no design skills). I like the way Jason explains how things work, not only tell you how to do things by rote.

I just ordered the book yesterday, but forgot about the possibility of having a pdf version. Will I still be able to order the pdf at the introductory price when it’s offered for sale without buying anything else to get that price?

Don’t know how exactly I managed this, but I have had the book for nearly a month now – great stuff. Ordered it with the Ruby on Rails book and had them both on the 3rd of February

Just ordered this book. I’d prefer the book itself rather than a PDF so I can read it when I’m not at home! And I’m not too keen on dragging laptops around :]

Well, I ordered the book the day I said I would at approximately 4:30pm my time (ET). I received it today. I was quite surprised at the fact that the included color chart is actually pretty useful with the font information on the back, and the Photoshop key commands (constantly forgetting a few of them). It doubles as a great bookmark for the book.
I was even more surprised, and completely satisfied when I opened the book randomly to one of the first few pages and the author was discussing balance. Color, layout, symmetrical, etc…all the different things to consider when designing aesthetic art, whether it be marketing or otherwise. I rarely see this mentioned, ever! This was something my elementary school art teacher taught me and has always stuck in my mind, but very few people realize it’s a necessity to know and understand. Those who are artistic, it comes naturally. Others aren’t told. I’m extremely pleased with the fact that this is included and can be completely assured that the rest of the book (in a less random order) will contain invaluable information. Thank you, Sitepoint. We could always see great value in a ‘design book aimed at developers’, but whether developers could see it was the question. Certainly seems to have struck a chord so far.

Just ordered my copy (pdf for now, then we’ll see…): looking forward to read it!
Just a note: when you click on the book in the bookshop a big note opens telling you: “Out of stock! etc.” without any mention about it being available in pdf format… I guess you’re not exactly pushing people to buy books as pdf, are you guys ;-) ?

That’s a fair point, Enrico. From a business point of view, it’s just as valuable to us to sell the hard copy than the PDF. As a rule I try to keep those types of messages as simple as possible so they can’t be misunderstood, but it should be possible to mention the PDF without clouding things too much.
