Barry Schwartz at SEORoundtable has two excellent articles about Google payments, and how it can now be used as a substitute to a merchant account by those selling through Google Base.

Yikes – a 27% fee? That’s outrageous!

pay attention… that’s $0.25 per transaction + 1.9%. I think you’ll find that with any merchant. As a matter of fact, Google is offering a much lower percentage per transaction than you will find with almost any gateway unless your pushing $10K through the merchant.
So, with that said, where do I get an invite?

This is exciting news. I am ready to give paypal the boot. To bad we will need to wait for the majority of people to start using it.

From what I’ve read on google base, the transaction fee is 2.5% + .25 transaction fee. So on a $50 sale you’re looking at $1.50 or a 3.0% total fee.

Google always trying there hand at everything, but i don’t think they will be successful in this new shopping business because paypal is well established, and google it might take a while for people to trust them with there money.
