In London in February? Check out the PHP Conference UK 2006, taking place at the Keyworth Centre right next to Waterloo station and Southbank University.
Organisation is thanks to Marcus and members of the PHP London User Group. The price (**cough** unlike most conferences **cough**) is something you can actually afford - 50.00 GBP [~ $90] if you register early - which you’ll need to as there’s only so much space at the venue.
It’s a one day event and the speakers are Derick Rethans, Pavel Kovsloski, Christopher
Kunz, Matt Zandstra (author of PHP 5 Objects, Patterns, and Practice) and, err.., well me in fact.
Help needed…
Here’s an inside track - so far I’ve been stressing Marcus by failing to deliver a talk summary on time (sorry Marcus). Part of the delay has been fatherhood for the second time (it’s a boy). The other part of the problem is I’m still in two minds about which talk to give and need some help deciding.
The talk I was thinking of doing would have a title something like “Parsing with PHP”; some basic theory, difference parsing strategies that have worked in PHP and reference to stuff like the Dokuwiki parser. Have a problem though: as a subject it may be “worthy” but it’s teetering between interesting at best and dull at worst. At least that’s how I see it.
The other talk, which Marcus tells me there’s a demand for (at least amongst PHP London members) would be something about AJAX and whatever happened with JPSpan. Now while that’s an altogether hotter subject, there’s a very good chance anything I say about it will be tending towards “AJAX sux”, which is not very Web 2.0 / hyper-enthusiast is it? Of course it could get pretty entertaining, depending on your point of view…
So - which one? Need to decide quick as Marcus needs a summary from me quickly.

Go with the ‘Ajax sux’ talk, but be prepared to back it up, and giving alternatives. I bet that’d leave a bigger impression on attendees than the other talk.

Congratulations on the baby boy Harry! I agree with Kings, people love a good nay-sayer talk in the face of back-slapping, even if they love to hate it.

AJAX, AJAX, AJAX!

My name is spelled with one R :)

Grrr .. I have a flight out of the country on the 10th, how typical …
January 5th, 2006 at 7:02 pm
Please *no* more AJAX :)
January 5th, 2006 at 7:21 pm
There’s no question: Do the “AJAX sux”-thingie! ;)

Whoops - teach me to paste stuff blindly - fixed.

So no interest in parsing with PHP then?

I’ve always wanted to go to a PHP conference, and it’d be great to meet guys like yourself and Derick. I’d certainly be interested in hearing a talk on PHP parsing. I’m quite honestly tired of the whole AJAX phenomenon (for now). If I see one more “Why can’t I AJAX this?” post on the vBulletin.com and vBulletin.org forums, I’m going to explode ;) Perhaps you could elaborate more on your plans for the PHP parsing talk a bit more…

I made an executive decision and decided my company should send me. So I’ve booked and paid for it! Now all I need to do is tell the boss :)
I don’t mind what you talk about really. The problem with parsing is relating it to a real world problem what most of your attendees are going to relate to.
The same thing applies to AJAX really. Having said that an “AJAX sux” talk would be interesting to counter the hype. I’d definitely be interested in a talk about where AJAX is used inappropriately and strategies for using AJAX in the real world.

ummm…
i proberly would be interested in going but i cant travel down to london, which kind of brings me to this; why london?
what is wrong with the north, ie newcastle for example or a quick hop across the border to edinburgh ;)
anyways, i would go for a talk on ajax as this is going to seriously effect how we develop over the coming months, well into 2006 i imagine.
btw, keep the nappies at home :p

Dr Livingston:
I would guess that given that the PHP London User Group are organising the conference…
*grin*
Personally, I would have preferred Birmingham, but anywhere in the UK means I can go!

yer, that kind of nails it in the head aye?

I would prefer the “Parsing with PHP” simply because I feel like I have been beaten over the head with AJAX recently. I’m even starting to cringe when I see the cleaner under my sink.
And if I may, have you ever considered doing a presentation, tutorial, or whatever…on the PHP parser? I always find that I’m asking myself how the PHP engine interprets certain lines of code or comparisons.
For example recently I needed to compare two arrays to see if they were structurally identical, and I wondered if I could just use ‘==’ . Fortunately PHPs exceptional documentation provided me with an answer, but I have never seen a good resource on the subject. Of course it could just be me.
I have no idea how you would structure a talk on this subject, but it something I would love to hear.

OK - it’s going to be the AJAX talk - hopefully a fresh angle on a subject everyone’s been hearing too much of.
There’s a good warm up at http://www.trickie.org/code/zend_engine_one/index.html (part two at http://www.trickie.org/code/zend_engine_two/index.html). There’s also a good discussion at the end of this book: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0672325616/

Harry, thank you for the references. I just bought ‘Advanced PHP Programming’ (along with several other books) over the holiday season. This morning I paged through the Zend Engine Internals section, and it is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks, Again…
January 8th, 2006 at 2:55 am
Would it be possible to post your presentation after the talk please?
I have found great difficulting in designing automated tests for user interfaces utilizing AJAX.
e.g.
http://xlab6.com/prado/tests/web_tests.php
May be touching how AJAX application in terms of functionality can be tested or otherwise.
Cheers, Wei.

Should appear on the phpconference website when done.
January 12th, 2006 at 3:10 am
Soemday … I’m gonna attend one of these conferences … btu until then I’m gonna comment on what people say there …
Harry, 1. congrats on a baby boy 2. Drop aajx, there’s too much rant, how-to, its evil, stuff around already. Go for ‘parsing with php’ … although I do feel strongly that parsing something with php doesn’t seem like its going to be mainsteram … maybe just one of those cool thing you can do with PHP at best.
And oh bollocks, why is ajax bad suddenly ? :( I’m surprised since you’re an active member of ajaxblog.com

[…] Another is PHP-Sicherheit, a German publication, one of the authors being Christopher Kunz, who was at the conference, talking about Hardened PHP. […]
