There are numerous threads in the SitePoint forums on the use of ssl and e-commerce. In researching a future column for SitePoint – I cam across this great comparison matrix at SSL Review showing the price, product, stability and several other factors for choosing an ssl certificate.

When it comes to securing a server or multiple servers – the key is to know your requirements. In some cases, a sophisticated commerce site handling transaction either of great value or in high volume would require an enterprise ready ssl certificate with extensive fraud control. However, a site handling light volumes of low cost transactions could save money by using a certificate from FreeSSL, which offers very economical options.
Finally, for those needing multiple certificates on sub-domains all under one primary domain – the best bet is a wildcard certificate. These enable administrators to setup numerous domains, such as sub1.domain.com, sub2.domain.com, sub3.domain.com and so on, with one ssl certificate.
These range anywhere from $200 and on up. They can be useful if you host many clients, but provide ssl services under one standard domain, giving each client a sub-domain for use of a secure server.

An interesting study might be to go one step further and attempt to assess how online shoppers view the reliability and reputation of each of these companies. For instance, I am almost certainly going to be purchasing a Verisign cert because I feel that their reputation far exceeds the rest.
I feel like this reputation would result in more orders because my audience would feel safer. My site deals in aftermarket auto parts and a large part of our audience is older, so it is very important that our visitors feel safe and secure.
Anyone have any thoughts or know of a study such as this?

SSLReview I believe may be biased or in fact owned or controlled by FreeSSL.
http://www.whichssl.com/browser_recognition.html shows a similar comparison chart.
As you compare the two charts, you will notice that the competition is not mentioned in either of them with the exception of the major players like Verisign or Thawte. Simply because you can not ignore those major ones.
Even though I believe InstantSSL may have something to do with the other chart, I would prefer them over FreeSSL if only because of slightly increased browser ubiquity.
Feel free to compare yourselves.

You are correct to note that SSLReview’s DNS is owned by the same person who owns FreeSSL.com. And WhichSSL is owned by the Comodo group which does InstantSSL. I do appreciate the fact that WhichSSL is slightly more open about the fact that they are owned by Comodo.
Interestingly neither site addresses the SSL claims of the other group, i.e. SSLReview does not address the necessity for good browser compliance and WhichSSL does not address the limitations of chained certificates.
Is there any place where one can get unbiased opinions on such things? Hope against hope…
