With the brilliant minds we have writing on topics such as Cold Fusion, DHTML/CSS, .Net and PHP in the SitePoint blogs, all of which run in some form or fashion on open source platforms, I am hoping to set a slightly different tone for this blog and would look forward to any feedback.
To date you can see my focus has been on some of the cornerstones of open source and web development (Apache, content management, MySQL and staying current on security vulnerabilities).
I am looking to forge deeper into Apache, the database arena, and stay on the lookout for new tools and techniques across the open source universe that help web designers and developers. From time to time I may even touch on administrative issues (mail servers, server management, security issues or notifications, etc.) as many developers double as sysadmin and webmasters.

One open source corner stone yet to be focused upon is Linux. Although I can see how this is not directly involved in web development I was wondering if you will devote any time to it?
I am looking forward to reading more about the db arena, the post about the MySQL GUI tool was quite insightful.

Definitely by default I will be addressing Linux and its use, tips and techniques..Additionally, something I have been spending some research time on lately is open source projects for Windows-based installations. Thanks for your suggestion!

If you’re going to talk about Linux at all, you should probably start with a post on the variety of bootable-from-CD distros. My personal favorite is Konppix (http://www.knoppix.org), though there are a bunch of others (check out http://lwn.net/Distributions/index.php3#cd for a REALLY long list).
This is a great way to introduce folks to Linux.

I would say “First Things First!”. As I am not using some obscure browser you may perceive it obliterate given the fact that you take PHP and other junk serious: I use IE. That is Internet Explorer. From Microsoft. Windows? Windoze??? Ah you got it now! What about it? Well… I don’t suppress Javascript errors although I could and Sitepoint is one of the few sites I recognize by their Javascript errors alone. Publishing content is nice but why not correct? And where are the XHTML and CSS? Just to make sure that you aren’t just oscillating airwaves that sound like the buzz people want to hear to get this really cool feeling. (…)
