SitePoint Ranked as a Top 500 Website in the World

Monday 19th December, 2005

Today, SitePoint Pty. Ltd. (sitepoint.com), provider of fun, practical and easy-to-understand content for Web professionals, was ranked among the top 500 sites in the world according to alexa.com -- a company that's widely regarded as a leading Web intelligence organization.

Alexa has been crawling the Web since early 1996 and gathers approximately 1.6 Terabytes (1600 gigabytes) of Web content per day. The Alexa.com online intelligence hub provides detailed, time-critical statistical data to both individual and corporate users, with an Alexa rank indicating a site's overall popularity among Web surfers.

According to Alexa.com, the Top 500 sites represent less than 0.003% of sites on the Internet but generate 45% of all Internet traffic. "The odds that any Web surfer in the world is on a Top 500 site at any give time is about 50/50", commented Geoffrey Mack from Alexa.com. "Like the distribution of wealth on the planet, the distribution of traffic on the Web is extremely lopsided".

"Our ranking among Alexa's top 500 sites in the world shows that word of mouth is spreading about our quality content and products, and sitepoint.com is meeting a real need amongst Web Professionals," commented SitePoint CEO and Co-founder Mark Harbottle. "If we can maintain our growth rate through 2006 we should be pushing for a top 200 ranking, which would be a remarkable achievement."
